Becoming a medical mentor is a rewarding experience
|
|
The AMA(SA) recognises that the first
years of working life can be a very daunting experience
for some and is excited to introduce the AMA(SA)
Mentor Scheme, sponsored
by MIGA.
The AMA(SA) has appointed Wendy Mazdon
as the co-ordinator for the entirety of the program. Wendy’s
role will be to match partners in the arrangement and monitor
these relationships in progress. She will also act as the
main point of contact during the program. Partnerships are
based on several criteria including employment discipline;
hobbies and interests; current status in the profession
and education/qualifications.
Mentees will be sourced from both
of the South Australian medical schools as well as doctors-in-training
from the major teaching hospitals, with the objective of
matching these with mentors from both the public and private
health sector.
Our program concludes at the end
of April 2008, with meetings between Mentors and Mentees
negotiated at mutually convenient times. There are two formal
functions – one for the scheme launch and the other
at the conclusion of the program. In between these events,
participants are encouraged to meet or interact at regular
intervals. As a guide, it is recommended that interactions
be at intervals not exceeding 3 months.
Mentors will be able to offer encouragement
and support in your studies and professional activities,
as well as helpful information or tips on how to deal with
situations that may arise in your learning.
The format of the partnerships will
differ between one and another, to allow for the most suitable
working formula for the individuals involved. The most important
factor to consider in this formula is the concerted effort
each individual is willing to make in the form of a formal
commitment; whether it is via regular face-to-face contact,
telephone or email - the success of the program is only
measured by the effort participants are willing to contribute
to it.
Generally, we recommend that 3 main
factors are considered:
1. Establish a suitable method of
contact, with frequency
2. Set goals/objectives to work towards together during
the scheme
3. Work with a plan to achieve these goals/objectives in
a set timeframe.
