The AMA(SA) recognises that
the first years of working life can be a very daunting experience
for some and, with this in mind, introduced the AMA(SA)
Mentor Scheme, with support
from MIGA. The scheme involves matching mentors and mentorees
who can exchange ideas and experiences in a muturally rewarding
relationship, which may endure even after the official mentor
period has passed.
Partnerships are based on
several criteria including employment discipline; hobbies
and interests; current status in the profession and education/qualifications.
Medical students and doctors in training are welcome to
participate as mentorees, and doctors in training may also
be mentors to colleagues at an earlier stage of their training.
Mentors offer encouragement
and support in mentorees' studies and professional activities,
as well as helpful information or tips on how to deal with
situations that may arise in their learning.
The format of the partnerships
differs to allow for the most suitable working formula for
the individuals involved.
