The AMA has a federal
structure with branches in each state and territory that
focus primarily on state matters, and a Canberra-based federal
body which deals with national issues.
In addition to elected
office-bearers, both the federal and state bodies have secretariats
of paid employees who assist the office-bearers in the day
to day affairs of the Association.
Federal AMA
The Federal AMA is
governed by its
Federal
Council, a body of 32 Board members
representing Craft Groups, Special Interest Groups, Branches
and medical students.
A six-member management committee, known as the Executive
Council, runs the day-to-day affairs of the Federal AMA.
AMA(SA) Structure
An incorporated body,
the AMA(SA) is governed by its State Council, a Board of
approximately 27 members (25 elected members plus any Federal
Councillors residing in South Australia as ex-officio members)
consisting of office bearers and representatives of Craft
Groups, Regional Areas, Women in Medicine and medical students.
The Council meets 11 times a year with no meeting in January.
Our Public Officer is the CEO.
The 8 member AMA(SA) Executive Committee is responsible
for the business of the Association between Council meetings
and meets twice a month. The AMA(SA) Finance Committee meets
monthly and makes recommendations to Council on budgeting,
subscription levels and on all financial matters through
the elected Honorary Treasurer. Other Standing Committees
include the AMA(SA) Council of General Practice, the Road
Safety, Industrial, Doctors in Training and Membership Committees.
Any member can nominate for any of the positions –
from Craft Group representative to President. Members are
encouraged to participate in committees. Contact the Secretariat
on AMA(SA)
to receive details about joining a committee or nominating
for council.
