After growing up in the
country South Australia, Dr Sexton studied for his medical
degree at the University of Adelaide. After internship at
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 1978, he then studied obstetrics
and gynaecology in the West Midlands in the UK before returning
to Adelaide to study paediatrics and anaesthetics, in preparation
for his future work in rural general practice at Mt Pleasant
and Birdwood, where he served the local communities for
29 years before leaving rural practice to teach at the University
of Adelaide Medical School.
In addition to his fulltime
work with patients, Dr Sexton has a keen and enduring interest
in doctors’ health and managed the innovative Dr DOC
Program for rural GPs across South Australia for five years
in 2006. He has helped establish the Doctors Health Working
Group in South Australia and develop the proposed South
Australian Doctors Health Program. The opportunity to make
a positive difference to professional life drew him to become
a member of AMA(SA) council in 2008. He has been a member
of the Medical Board of SA since 2005 and currently holds
the position of presiding member.
